An Azure application that receives neurotransmitter and hormone test results from external labs, applies the client's expert rules, and produces a reviewed PDF report with supplement recommendations for patients and their doctors.
Lab-Result Interpretation and Supplement Recommendations for a Brain Health Company

Overview

A brain health company recommends its own supplements based on each patient's neurotransmitter and hormone test results, from saliva and urine samples processed by external laboratories. Its experts used to read each set of results and write the recommendations by hand.

CoreMicros designed an application that automates this work while keeping the experts in charge of every report. CoreMicros served on the project as Senior Design Engineer.

How it works

  1. The lab signals new results. When a patient's results are ready, the lab notifies the application through a webhook.
  2. The application fetches the results. It retrieves the structured data (JSON) from the lab's API, so no one re-types values from a lab report.
  3. The client's rules are applied. A rules engine runs the company's own interpretation rules, written by its experts and proprietary to the company, and picks the most appropriate recommendations from its range of supplements.
  4. A PDF report is produced, addressed to the patient, their doctor, or both.
  5. Every report is reviewed. The company's staff review each PDF, and the application lets them edit the recommendations before the report goes out.

Results

  • Replaced writing each set of recommendations by hand with a consistent, rule-based first draft.
  • Results arrive as data straight from the lab, so they are never re-typed.
  • The experts keep the final say: nothing is sent without review.
  • The interpretation rules remain the company's own and can evolve with its expertise.

Technology

C# and Blazor (server-rendered) with SQL Server, running entirely on Microsoft Azure, integrated with the labs through webhooks and their APIs.
